The Southern Great Barrier Reef,
from a riverside bed.
Bundaberg is the gateway to the Southern Great Barrier Reef — Lady Musgrave day cruises depart from Port Marina, Burnett Heads (18.4 km / 25 min) and Lady Elliot Island flights leave from Bundaberg Airport (5.8 km / 8 min). Burnett Riverside Hotel puts you minutes from both departure points, with early-start practicality and H2O for the celebratory dinner after.
Lady Musgrave: how the day trip works
Lady Musgrave Experience runs the day cruise out of Port Marina at Burnett Heads — 18.4 km / 25 minutes from the hotel. The cruise crosses the lagoon, anchors at a fixed reef pontoon for the day, and gives you snorkelling, glass-bottom-boat tours and a buffet lunch. Departure is typically around 7:30 am; return is usually 5–6 pm. Most guests leave the hotel by 6:00 am.
Book directly with Lady Musgrave Experience. Peak weekends and school holidays sell out — book the cruise first, then your hotel night around the confirmed date.
Lady Elliot: the flight option
Lady Elliot Island is a coral cay at the southernmost tip of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, famous for its resident manta rays and exceptional snorkelling straight off the beach. Access is by scenic flight on Seair Pacific from a handful of regional airports — Bundaberg Airport (BDB) is the closest to the hotel at 5.8 km / 8 minutes. Day visits and overnight stays are both available; book through Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort.
The light-aircraft flight is part of the experience — flying low over the reef on the way out. Day visits include snorkelling, guided reef walks (at low tide) and lunch on the island.
Early-start logistics from the hotel
Both trips need pre-dawn organisation. The practical sequence:
- The night before — pack the dry bag (towel, sunscreen, swimsuit, a change of clothes). H2O finishes service around late evening — early dinner if you're starting at 6 am.
- Breakfast — River Cruz Cafe next door opens at 5:30 am daily. If you're in a kitchenette room (Family Studio, Loft Apartment, Two Bedroom Apartment), self-catering the very early start is simplest.
- Drive out — 25 min to Port Marina or 8 min to the airport. Free secure underground parking at the hotel means your car is right there.
- Late return — back in town by 5–6 pm typically. H2O reopens at 4 pm; a deck table beats a half-asleep drive home.
Two-day reef weekend
An ambitious but realistic plan from a midweek arrival:
Day 1 (Saturday) — Lady Musgrave Experience day cruise from Port Marina. Dinner at H2O on the deck. Riverview Queen or Two Bedroom Apartment for the river-view recovery.
Day 2 (Sunday) — Slow-start breakfast at River Cruz. Drive to Mon Repos / Bargara for the morning, lunch at Bargara, swim. Optional: Bundaberg Rum Distillery tour on the way home. Dinner at Old Bundy Tavern (best pub food in town) or White China (semi-fine Chinese).
For November–March stays, add a Mon Repos turtle encounter on one of the nights — see our turtle-season hub.
