Kayaking and Paddling Bundaberg: Burnett River and Coastal Guide

The Burnett River through Bundaberg provides a broad, calm tidal waterway whose paddling character ranges from the mangrove estuary channels near Burnett Heads to the open river expanse through the CBD's riverside precincts. The Woongarra Coast's sheltered bays between Bargara and Elliott Heads provide coastal sea-kayaking access to the Woongarra Marine Park's reef systems from the water surface. For the kayak and stand-up paddleboard traveller, Bundaberg provides a water-based touring environment that pairs naturally with the wildlife and nature experiences the region offers.

Burnett River Paddling

The Burnett River from the CBD boat ramps to Burnett Heads is approximately 15km of tidal estuary — a full-day paddling circuit with mangrove passages, bird life (herons, pelicans, kingfishers, osprey), and the changing landscape from urban waterfront to rural estuary margins. The tidal influence means outbound paddling against the incoming tide and return paddling with the outgoing tide (or vice versa depending on departure time) — plan departure around the tidal schedule. Kayak hire is available from adventure and outdoors hire operators in the Bundaberg area.

Woongarra Coast Sea Kayaking

The Woongarra Coast from Bargara to Elliott Heads provides sea-kayaking access to the Woongarra Marine Park's reef systems and the coastal rock platform environments inaccessible from shore. Corals Cove, accessible by sea kayak from Kelly's Beach, provides the marine park snorkelling experience from a paddling approach. Sea-kayaking conditions on the Woongarra Coast are calm during the trade wind (easterly) season (May–October); summer swell and wind conditions should be assessed on the day before offshore coastal paddling.

Baldwin Swamp

Baldwin Swamp Environmental Park's paperbark wetlands provide a short but distinctive paddling environment — a 1km canoe circuit through the paperbark channels where birdwatching from a paddling perspective encounters the wetland's herons, cormorants, and spoonbills at waterline level. The Baldwin Swamp paddle is a half-hour activity that pairs with the park's walking trail for a full morning nature experience.

Equipment and Safety

Life jackets are required by Queensland law for all kayak and paddleboard activities on coastal waters. Tidal awareness is essential for Burnett River paddling — check tide times before departure. The Woongarra Coast sea-kayaking requires assessment of current weather and sea conditions; do not paddle offshore in cross-winds above 15 knots.
