Bundaberg Autumn Guide: March to May Travel Tips
Autumn in Bundaberg — March through May — is a transition season that combines the tail of the turtle hatching programme (March) with the approach of the whale watching season (May), the comfort of cooling subtropical temperatures, and the April event calendar that includes FOOD Week and the Easter long weekend. Autumn is the season that rewards the visitor with the most favourable balance of climate, event programming, and activity availability: the turtle crowds of summer have departed, the whale watching charter vessels have not yet filled with the May-June first-winter bookings, and the weather is genuinely beautiful.
Autumn Climate
March–May: daily maximums 26–28°C (March) to 22–24°C (May), declining humidity as the wet season concludes, overnight minimums 18–20°C (March) to 14–16°C (May). March may still produce occasional afternoon thunderstorms from the departing wet season; April and May are typically dry. Sea temperature remains warm (24–25°C) through April — comfortable for reef snorkelling without a wetsuit. Autumn light quality — the lower sun angle of the post-equinox months — produces excellent photography conditions throughout the day.
Turtle Hatching — March
March is the final month of the turtle hatching season at Mon Repos. Late March hatching activity is less predictable than the January peak, but the encounter programme continues while nests are active. Late-season turtle bookings have better availability than December–February; last-minute March bookings are sometimes possible. A March visit that captures the final hatching season opportunity while enjoying autumn's improving climate represents one of the best value Bundaberg visits of the year.
FOOD Week (April)
FOOD Week is autumn's signature event — a programme of producer dinners, farm tours, and food market events that concentrates the Bundaberg region's agricultural identity into a week of curated culinary experiences. April accommodation and FOOD Week event tickets should be booked simultaneously; both fill early from the Brisbane day-trip and overnight visitor cohort.
Lady Musgrave Island in Autumn
The autumn months — particularly April and May — provide the most settled ocean conditions for the offshore Lady Musgrave crossing. Post-wet-season swell has dissipated; the winter trade winds have not yet established. The April–May Lady Musgrave day trip produces the best combination of sea conditions, water visibility, and comfortable vessel travel of the year.
