Whale season in Bundaberg:

From May to November, the east Australian humpback migration passes Bundaberg's offshore waters — peak activity July to October. Charters reach the whales in 30–45 minutes and leave early, most between 7:30 and 8:30 am. When to come, and why the month matters
Humpbacks head north from May to August on the breeding migration, then return south from August to November with calves in tow. Bundaberg catches both directions, which is what gives the region a six-month season rather than a short window.
The sweet spot is August to October, when the southward migration overlaps with late northern stragglers. July to September is when you're most likely to strike groups — mothers with calves, escort males, and competitive pods whose surface activity is the most dramatic thing you'll see all year.
It also happens to be Bundaberg's best weather. The subtropical winter and early spring are mild, dry and calm — the same conditions that make the offshore trip comfortable make the rest of the region worth staying for.
How the day actually runs
Charters depart from the Port of Bundaberg and the Burnett River wharves. Vessels range from small specialist boats carrying 12–25 passengers to larger multi-deck vessels — the small ones get closer, the large ones sit steadier in an ocean swell. Pick according to how you handle water.
Departures are typically 7:30–8:30 am, and the whales are 15–50 km out, so budget 30–45 minutes each way on top of the time on station. You'll be back for the afternoon.

The early start, and how we handle it
A 7:30 am departure at Burnett Heads means leaving the hotel around 6:45 am. That is earlier than most Bundaberg cafés open, so plan breakfast rather than assume it.
Every room has tea and coffee making facilities, and the Family Studio, Loft Apartment and Two Bedroom Apartment have a kitchenette if you'd rather sort your own early start. Tell us at booking that you're on a whale charter and we'll keep it in mind when we allocate your room.

The charter takes a morning. Bundaberg fills the rest.
- Bargara Beach (13.3 km / 18 min) — the obvious afternoon, and the coast road out to Burnett Heads runs past it.
- Bundaberg Rum Distillery (3.0 km / 6 min) — the daytime essential; book ahead in school holidays.
- Hinkler Hall of Aviation + Botanic Gardens (2.8 km / 5 min) — quiet, well-curated, good with children.
- Childers (53.6 km / 51 min) — heritage streetscape and the longer Sunday drive.
